Meaningful Monday: Guest Nicole Byrum

Great is His Faithfulness is not just a song, a title, or a passing thought. He IS faithful, and we see proof of His faithfulness to us every single day. Meaningful Monday posts are from guests who are willing to share their thoughts, lessons, and experiences on how faithful He has been in their lives.

This week, I am honored and excited to introduce Nicole Byrum. Nicole is Jesus, chocolate, and coffee lover from northwest Ohio. She is a wife, mother, and a marriage and family therapist working with women who are recovering from addiction. She is a fairly new author, inspired by her experiences as a therapist, but has enjoyed writing and looks forward to continuing writing in the future. I hope her post blesses you as it has me.

Faithful to Me

I have a deep, hidden confession to make. Perhaps it might sound like a thought that has roamed through your mind a time or two. So, without further ado, here it is: Sometimes, for a brief moment, I ponder the question, “Is what I believe really true?”

I was having such a moment the other day. Immediately, I felt a response within me gently say, “C’mon Nicole. You know.” The tone of the response was one I might use if one of my kids had asked me if I loved them. For the record, I don’t believe either of them have ever asked me that question. But if they did, I would humbly ask them to consider the evidence of my love that they had seen or experienced throughout their lives. I pray that would be a long list.

Whenever I have moments of doubt, my heavenly Father gently reminds me of the evidence for what I know to be true. Sometimes He does this by reminding me of the wonders of creation- and how only an eternal, all knowing, intelligent God could have created such a magnificent universe full of diverse and amazing creatures!

Sometimes He reminds me of the historical evidence and accurate documentation of the Bible; of the detailed narrative of the history of Israel, and how Jesus perfectly fulfilled all of the Old Testament prophecies; of the recorded eye-witness accounts of the crucifixion and resurrection.

He also reminds me of His Spirit who is living within me. 1 Corinthians 1:22 says, “God has set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.” If I ever have any doubt of the truth, I need only remember the work of the Holy Spirit in my life. Although I have often experienced the gentle voice and nudging of the Spirit, there is one experience that is imprinted in my memory like no other.

The summer of 1999 was the summer before my senior year of high school. It was also the summer I went on a missions trip to Toronto with my youth group. It was a good but challenging week, and I will forever be grateful for that life-changing experience. At one point in the week, a small group of us had gathered in the stairwell of our temporary residence to pray. I cannot recall all of the circumstances now, but I remember we had gathered to pray against the spiritual attacks of the enemy.

During that time of prayer, a good friend of mine and I started singing a song acapella - one of our favorites at the time. Now, I am definitely not one to sing in front of people - especially acapella! I can only describe that moment as beautifully powerful. As we sang, I felt peace and assurance. I also know I’ve never sang like that before or since. I praise God even now (21 years later!) for that rich, Spirit-filled moment.

I also praise God that He is such a patient and loving Father. I thank Him for His kindness in my moments of doubt as He gently reminds me of the long list of evidence of His goodness, love, and truth. Indeed, He is always faithful.

His faithfulness, incidentally, was what my friend and I sang about all those years ago during those brief moments in the stairwell. The song, Faithful to Me” by Jennifer Knapp, will forever be a testament to God’s unrelenting faithfulness, and for me, a reminder of the power of His Holy Spirit. A reminder of my deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. A reminder that erases all of my doubt.
